The author was fortunate enough to participate in the Migration Institute of Australia’s national conference last week in Hobart. It was encouraging to hear Immigration Minister Andrew Giles confirming the important role of Immigration Professionals in nation-building when he acknowledged that, ‘…good migration advice…changes lives for the better by transforming them’. The new Minister has a background in law, and once acted for 433 asylum seekers who controversially sought refuge in Australia on board the Norwegian freighter, MV Tampa in 2001.

In speaking to the delegation, Minister Giles also confirmed his commitment and progress towards working through the stifling backlog of visa applications accrued over the last few years of the previous Government, as well as the prioritisation of Immigration policy as part of the nations’ post-Covid recovery.

The writer was also pleased for the opportunity to personally thank Minister Giles for his engagement with the Migration Advice Profession, and to make representations to retain Australia’s Business Innovation and Investment programme which has been unfairly maligned in some circles of the popular press in recent weeks.
